New Mexico has strong laws that protect people who carry insurance policies–auto, home, and health.  For example, the New Mexico Mandatory Financial Responsibility Act says that New Mexicans must carry liability automobile insurance to help cover medical bills, property damage, and other claims when the insured causes a car accident.

The same law also says that New Mexicans have the right to purchase uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage in the same amount as the insured’s liability coverage.  In other words, if you carry $25,000.00 in liability coverage (which protects you when you cause an accident), you have the right to also carry $25,000.00 in uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage (which protects you when someone without insurance causes a collision and hurts you or your family members).

Unfortunately, many insurance companies, insurance adjusters, or insurance agents do not understand or properly apply these important laws.  Many New Mexicans do not understand the purpose of their insurance coverages, and agents and adjusters do not always explain the importance of carrying good liability coverage to protect the insured’s personal assets in case they cause a crash.  Likewise, many agents and adjusters do not explain how important it is to carry uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage, since New Mexico has one of the highest numbers of uninsured drivers on our roads–driving and sometimes causing bad accidents with serious injuries.  Without uninsured motorists coverage, people hurt by uninsured drivers are left high and dry.
